Continuing Wazoku’s sustainability journey – net zero by 2030

// Ian Smyth // Aug 27, 2021

Sustainability has always been important to Wazoku. Last year we became one of the first innovation companies in the world to achieve carbon neutral status, and we work alongside some of the world’s biggest brands like Enel to help them achieve their sustainability goals.

We are now continuing our sustainability journey by joining Tech Zero, a group of innovative UK tech companies working together to fight the climate crisis, accelerate progress to net zero and help consumers make greener choices.

It is supported by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and organised by Tech Nation, the national network for tech entrepreneurs. Other Tech Zero members include bulb, Revolut and Moneysupermarket, and there is a collective commitment to helping tech firms in the UK reach net zero by the end of 2030.

It’s an achievable goal if companies engage and commit, and we are proud to play such a prominent role in helping to address climate change

‘A code red for humanity’

A recent report (9 August 2021) by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned of the severe consequences of failing to change our behaviour. The authors spoke about 'a code red for humanity', and it's an undoubtedly dire situation - climate change is widespread, rapid and intensifying and is due mainly to the way humans are treating the planet.

If we do not change the course we are on, then the planet will experience extreme temperatures, rising sea levels and the critical temperature limit of 1.5C will be broken in just over a decade. The impact will be devasting – cities will be underwater, natural habitats destroyed, droughts will be commonplace, and life as we know it will be greatly impacted.

The report did, however, provide at least some optimism for the future. If we can make deep cuts in the emissions of greenhouse gases, then it is possible to stabilise rising temperatures and avert catastrophe. This requires a collective effort on the part of governments, individuals and businesses all over the world.

An on-going and public commitment

This means that businesses need to put their hand up and take responsibility to get their own house in order. That’s why Wazoku began the journey to becoming carbon neutral, and it's why we have become part of Tech Zero. By joining Tech Zero we are making a public commitment to:

  • Measure all our scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions, and report them publicly each year.
  • Publish more details about how we plan to reach net zero by the end of 2021 or within a year of joining Tech Zero, including setting a net zero target date and an interim target(s).
  • Appoint a member of our executive team to be responsible and accountable for our net zero targets.
  • Communicate our climate commitments in other meaningful ways, including to our customers.
  • Report progress on short- and medium-term targets to our Board annually, and on our website.
  • Reach net zero by 2030

We know that this is not a one-off and our commitment to sustainability is whole-hearted and long-term. Sustainability is in many ways embedded in the ethos of what we do.

Many Wazoku clients use our Enterprise Innovation Platform to crowdsource ideas to support their own sustainability initiatives, while many others use the platform to generate and develop ideas to help address UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Sustainable innovation

The world has a greater need for sustainable innovation than at any other time in its history. We are all facing massive challenges that require massive solutions. We are proud that our platform and services are being used for this purpose.

But it’s also essential for us to do business in the right way, which is why we are joining Tech Zero and making this commitment to reaching net zero.

If you work at a UK tech company and want to become part of the Tech Zero community, you can find more details and join up here.
